Palestine and the Future of Palestinian Youth Resource Center
My name is Zakir. I am a 10th-grade student intern at ILIA. I put together this Youth Advocacy Projects website focused on Palestine because I feel that it is needed to spread awareness about the inhumane Palestinian crisis that is currently going on. I hope that this website will help you and others be educated on this topic, and we can work together to make a change.
The forced removal of Palestinian families is considered a potential war crime according to The United Nations Commission for Human Rights. Here at ILIA, through our Palestine Resource Center, we came across the fact that today there are more than 7 million Palestinian refugees. However, the vast majority of Americans are unaware of this crisis. Palestinian refugees are more than just numbers, they are mothers, fathers, and children who dream of a better future.
What's Happening In Palestine?
General Summary:
After World War II, several European countries attempted to remove Jews. After they had no place to go, the Jewish immigrants turned to Palestine for support.
Palestine allowed the settlers to settle in a small portion of Palestine.
As time passed, the settlers wanted more space and began taking over the land of Palestinians.
In order to take over this land, forced displacement occurred and Palestinians were forced from their homes.
Background
There are some 3 million Palestinians and around 600,000 Israeli settlers living in the West Bank, an area that includes East Jerusalem. Israel captured the West Bank, as well as the Gaza Strip, during a war with its Arab neighbors in 1967. These areas are known today as the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT).
Since the start of the occupation, Israel has administered different parts of the OPT in different ways. In 1967, Israel unilaterally annexed East Jerusalem and included these Palestinian parts of the city, as well as a surrounding area of over 70km2, within the boundaries of the Israeli municipality of Jerusalem.
